Digital Eye Strain (Computer Vision Syndrome)
Digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome (CVS), is a group of visual and musculoskeletal symptoms associated with prolonged use of digital screens.
Common Symptoms
- Eye fatigue or heaviness
- Blurred or fluctuating vision
- Dryness, burning, or irritation
- Headaches during or after screen use
- Neck and shoulder discomfort
Prevention and The 20-20-20 Rule
Decreased blinking while focusing on screens leads to tear film instability. Management requires behavioral changes:
- The 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
- Maintain screen distance of approximately 50–70 cm.
- Position the top of the screen slightly below eye level.
- Consider artificial tears if dryness persists.
